Hardware Breakdown: Hardware breakdowns can come in many different forms depending on the factor leading to its demise. A power surge can lead to hardware breaking down. This occurs when the power supply to your hardware is greater than the one that it can handle. This will cause the hard drive to stop functioning and thus your data may be lost. Another cause may be mishandling and carelessness. In the case of CDs and DVDs, leaving them lying around will cause them to get scratches thus, data may be lost. If a hard drive is being moved from one PC to another, it may drop and crash and may cause data to be lost. Thus, whenever handling hardware, it is always good to be very careful.

System Breakdown: In the case of an operating system, it is the one that forms the basis and the platform for other software to be installed. An operating system may breakdown due to a virus, which will either corrupt or destroy some system files. An operating system may also breakdown if some system files are corrupted, changed or deleted. If the platform is changed, it means that other things built on that platform will have to change. Thus, if the operating system is reconfigured, corrupted or some files are missing, the data within it will change or will be lost.

Criminal Break-ins: This means that some form of crime is performed to get access to data and destroy it. This may include theft, hacking into a system and even arson i.e. deliberately starting a fire to cause destruction of data. Even in these extreme cases like this data can be recovered.

Natural Disaster Break-ins: Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, tornadoes etc. come very unexpectedly as thieves in the night. These are occurrences that cannot be stopped or avoided. They usually cause mass destruction and loss, even of data.
