Error While Saving File in Windows Vista
Windows Vista uses new rules to partition hard disks that are incompatible with earlier Windows versions including Windows XP and Server 2003. The rules are applied to the starting and ending sectors of Vista partitions. In Windows Vista, partition border is created on the basis of registry setting, which was earlier based on cylinder boundary. When a user attempts to save any file on hard disk, formatted in earlier versions like Windows XP with Windows Vista the following error messages may occur.
• "Drive Letter:FolderFileName You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the Documents folder instead?"
• "Access to Drive Letter:FolderFileName was denied"
The partitioning procedure incompatibility doesn't let the earlier version formatted hard drive to save files under Windows Vista. So, the error messages are encountered.
In order to resolve the issue, we need to format the hard drive as per the new partitioning rules of Windows Vista. Thus, it is suggested to backup all the data, preferably on an external storage media. If the backup is not up-to-date or any issue occurs with the external storage media, we will have to use Data Recovery utilities to extract the lost data files.
• We need to format the partition to make it usable in Vista (Computer > Right Click on Partition > Format)
• If we get the UAC (User Account Control) message for confirmation or password, we need to type an administrator password or click Continue

Keeping your files safe
Of late I have had a lot of customers call me up to recover their precious data from their laptop or desktop PC after a serious crash or virus attack. A simple but rarely used method which can be adopted by all operating systems whether it be XP or Vista. The only requirement is that your hard drive has to be partitioned or you need to have a second hard drive available.
So in order to save you a great deal of heartache in the future I will now go through with you how to move your 'My Documents' folder from its default location at the time when windows was installed to another partition or better still another hard drive which will greatly reduce any risk of data loss.
First go to the intended new location of your 'My Documents' folder, create a new folder and rename it, yep you guessed it 'My Documents'.
Now we will tell the computer to relocate the contents of your original 'My Documents' folder to the new folder you have just created on another hard drive or partition.
To do that go to Start and open up the Start menu in the bottom left corner of your desktop, 'Right Click' on 'My Documents' in the start menu. Left Click on 'Properties' on the pop- up menu.
In Vista click on the 'Location' tab in the newly opened 'Documents Properties' box.
Then click the 'Move' button and then navigate to and select your new 'My Documents' folder. Your computer will now move you 'My Documents' files from the folder in C: drive to your newly created folder on another partition or hard drive.
Now I hear you ask? What is the purpose of changing the location of your original 'My Documents' folder off C: drive?
Well to answer that question, when people have problems with their computer whether it be their operating system 'Windows' is sick, they have caught a virus which has gone rampant or if your hard drive is playing up to the point where Windows won't boot up, the first thing you will be asking yourself is 'Are my personal files ok!' In most cases they will still be there but they just won't be readily accessible. In other cases a serious 'recovery mission' might be what the doctor orders; which can be expensive and time consuming and provides no guarantee of recovering all if any files especially if a virus is involved or the hard drive has lost its file structure is or damaged in any way.
So it goes without saying 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'!
For just a little configuration change you can save yourself the possibility of a Huge Headache while giving yourself peace of mind that your personal data is secure!

Chkdsk Can't Repair FAT32 Volume. By Jacob Luis
FAT32 is supported by Windows XP, 2003, 2000 and Vista (logical drives) and holds cluster values in 32-bit field. This file system can undergo corruption and need Data Recovery. The primary repair option is to run Chkdsk. Windows includes Chkdsk so as to check file system integrity and fix logical errors and can be run through Command Prompt or Recovery Console.
In few of the cases, the Chkdsk utility may unexpectedly quit without curing corruption. Though the corruption exists and volumes are corrupt and inaccessible, but the utility may prompt the correct file system type:

Recover a Busted External Hard Drive.
Problem
My wife kicked my 500 GB Western Digital external hard drive onto the ground and it stopped working. When you plug it in, it clicks repeatedly and never works.
I have tried freezing the drive, removing the SATA drive inside and installing it directly into the PC, and shaking it and crying, and none of these things have worked.
Is there a way to recover the data on this drive without paying a lot of money and risking being thrown in prison for pirated software?
Answer:
well with that kind of damage i doubt so. If it is truely un-readable then its dead. If it were a 2.5" one then possibly or it may still work. 3.5" inches are less durable and not meant to be moved around too much.
if you know how to use hardware as in opening insides, etc.
you have to find another of the same drive then open em both up.
check your disk 1st, see if the cylinders are broken, if the cylinders are broken, then there's no way to receover data; if not then open the other one and just replace the cylinders in urs with the new hd, then put the new hd together and plug it in, if you did all good, it should work;best take it to a computer shop who knows how to replace cylinders and they can help you find the same hd as well.

1. Purchase a "Laptop Hard Drive Adaptor Kit" to allow you to plug your laptop hard drive into a standard PC (2.5 TO 3.5 inch IDE HDD).
2. Find a functioning standard PC that can read the file system that was on the laptop. One would need Windows 2k/XP or a Linux distribution to read an NTFS/FAT file system, whereas only a Linux distribution can read the EXT3 file system.
3. Open up the case and add the laptop drive with adaptor kit as a secondary HDD. Be sure that you have set this drive to either Cable Select, or Slave, depending on the configuration of the system, and the available IDE ports.
4. Copy the data you need from the laptop drive to the main drive of the PC, or consider using removable storage for small files.

1. Purchase or cannibalize a 2.5" USB 2.0 or Firewire drive enclosure.

FREEZING HARD DRIVE FOR RECOVERY.
About 2 weeks ago, I wrote an article about hard disk recovery that was quite popular (I received approximately 20000 hits for it). The article covered a couple of solutions to help you in the case where your hard drive would stop working. While I was doing some research for this article, I ended up on a few stories about people who were putting their HD in the freezer to help fix it long enough to be able to recover their data. I guess that by doing this, some metal parts in the HD could contract, putting back in place defective parts, and making everything work again for a few minutes.
What do you guys think? Myth or reality? It seems that a lot of people agree that this solution actually works, so I decided to test it myself with an old Maxtor hard drive that failed me a couple of weeks ago. There was no important data on there, so losing the disk didn't really bother me.
Before putting it in the freezer, the drive was making a weird clicking noise, and the computer was showing me this message: Primary hard drive 0 not found, strike F1 to retry boot, F2 to run the setup utility.
I removed the hard disk from the computer and sealed it in a ziplock bag to prevent condensation.
After this, I shoved it in the freezer, and waited an hour.
I finally installed it back in the computer, closed the case, and pushed on the power button.
YES! it works, the computer is starting correctly! Unfortunately, after I logged in, Windows froze and I wasn't able to do anything. I tried rebooting, and....
Well, at least the hard disk spun for about 2 minutes before crashing again. Maybe that's not long enough to let me recover any data, but it worked for a little while. :)
edit: The day after, I shoved the hard drive back in the freezer for 24 hours. After getting it out, I was able to get 20 more minutes of life out it.
